WATER FALLS

WAILUA FALLSKAUAI HAWAII

The waterfalls are beautiful but you can only view them from the end of a long, dead-end, winding road, up high. There is limited parking with a small turn-around area where you can wait a few minutes for others to leave. One space is designated disabled. You get out of your car, look over a barricade and there they are. It is possible to see the top of the waterfalls over the barricade from a wheelchair, however views of the base of waterfall require you to peer over the stone wall. The view from the parking lot is a somewhat kitty corner view of the falls but it is nice.
It is a bit disappointing that all visitors will only be able to see this waterfall from these limited viewing areas - you may find a couple of hiking trails if you know where to look or buy the right guidebook and have the physical ability to make the hike.

Wailua Falls, just north of Lihue, is a step off the beaten path. Located at the south end of the Wailua river, it cascades into two streams, dropping 80-feet below. Some even say the distance is more accurately described as 200 feet.Like other spectacular spots on Kauai used as film locations, Wailua Falls is most recognized in the opening credits of the long-running television show "Fantasy Island." Easily accessible, Wailua Falls can be seen from the roadside, so you can leave your hiking boots behind. To get there, head north from Lihue and follow Maalo Road in Hanamaulu. Travel uphill for about three miles. If you visit in the mornings, you may be treated to a rainbow, making for an amazing photo of Wailua Falls.
